Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disability! This celebration takes place annually from September 15 through October 15. Continuando con la celebración del mes de la herencia hispana, queremos destacar tres figuras contemporáneas con Síndrome Down que están dando de qué hablar a nivel internacional. Estos son: Pablo Pineda Ferrer, Sofía Girau e Isabelle Springmühl.
Isabella Springmuhl Tejada nació en la Ciudad de Guatemala, en 1996. Isabela es diseñadora de modas. Se destaca por ser la primera diseñadora de moda en tener síndrome de Down. Con solo 19 años, fue la primera diseñadora de moda con síndrome de Down en participar en la Semana de la Moda de Londres, participando en el International Fashion Showcase, y también se encontraba entre la lista de figuras inspiradoras e influyentes nombradas entre las 100 mujeres de la BBC. Más tarde ese mismo año, Isabella también fue invitada a mostrar sus colecciones en Roma. Bajo su marca Down to Xjabelle, crea diseños sostenibles utilizando coloridas telas guatemaltecas Adicionalmente, con su marca de ropa la chica genera empleo para 120 mujeres indígenas.
Pablo, Sofía e Isabella son ejemplo de que las personas con discapacidad en el desarrollo pueden ser exitosas si dejamos a un lado el estigma y el discrimen.
Continuing with the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to highlight three contemporary figures with Down syndrome, who are something to talk about internationally. These are: Pablo Pineda Ferrer, Sofía Girau and Isabelle Springmühl.
Pablo Pineda was born in Malaga Spain in 1974 and stands out for being the first European with Down syndrome to graduate from a university with the degree in psychopedagogy. Pablo is a teacher, lecturer, presenter, writer, actor and author of the books The Challenge of Learning (2013) and Children with Special Abilities (2015). Pineda currently works at the Adecco Foundation as a consultant, where he raises awareness and does trainings for companies and society in general. He was awarded the Silver Shell for Best Actor at the 2009 San Sebastian International Film Festival for his participation in the film Yo, también. Through his work as a lecturer and writer, he raises awareness about people with disabilities.
Sofia Jirau was born in 1997 in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and is the first person with Down syndrome to model for Victoria’s Secret. Sofia started working as a professional model in 2019. She has had the opportunity to work with top designers and walked in New York Fashion Week and Los Angeles Fashion Week. Sofia is also a designer. Her brand Alavett features everyday accessories such as notebooks, handbags, phone cases, pillowcases and mugs.
Isabella Springmuhl Tejada was born in Guatemala City in 1996. Isabela is a fashion designer. She is notable for being the first fashion designer to have Down syndrome. At just 19 years old, she was the first fashion designer with Down syndrome to participate in London Fashion Week, participating in the International Fashion Showcase, and was also among the list of inspiring and influential figures named among the BBC's 100 women. Later that year, Isabella was also invited to show her collections in Rome. Under her brand Down to Xjabelle, she creates sustainable designs using colorful Guatemalan fabrics. Additionally, with her clothing brand, she generates employment for 120 indigenous women.
Pablo, Sofia and Isabella are examples that people with developmental disabilities can be successful if we put aside stigma and discrimination.
