NCCDD Awards Contract to Division of Aging and Adult Services for Rethinking Guardianship

Raleigh, NC (February 23, 2015) – The Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS), under the Department of Health and Human Services, was awarded a $75,000 contract by the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities (NCCDD) to establish the Rethinking Guardianship: Building a Case for Less Restrictive Alternatives initiative for the North Carolina disability community.

This initiative aims to create a long-term, statewide collaborative work group to address innovative alternatives to guardianship. In its work, the group will explore changes needed to the guardianship statutes, policies and practices; collect relevant data to support innovative approaches to guardianship alternatives; and build a knowledgebase of best practices. It will also explore what other states are providing as alternatives to guardianship for individuals with intellectual and other developmental disabilities (I/DD).

“DAAS is seeking innovative solutions to address a growing concern for the disability community in North Carolina,” said NCCDD Executive Director Chris Egan. “Through this contract, our hope is to increase protections for people with disabilities, consider and promote more choices in decision making supports, and foster greater protection of rights for people with I/DD.”
