Celebrating the ADA's 31st Anniversary
To celebrate the ADA’s 31st anniversary, the North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities (NCCDD) presents an Accessibility Challenge to challenge everyone to make something accessible to people with disabilities. You can also share with us something you did in the past that may inspire others to make the community more accessible.

Examples of how you can join in NCCDD's Accessibility Challenge!
- A person who loves to post videos on YouTube could learn how to caption videos and caption at least one of them to make them accessible to Deaf and Hard of Hearing people.
- A person who already captions YouTube videos could learn how to add audio description to make the videos accessible to people with vision loss.
- A restaurant that has a step to access a patio dining area could install a ramp or find a way to make the patio area more accessible to people with mobility disabilities.
- A business that has no employees with documented disabilities could make a commitment to hire a person with a disability.
- A school or an apartment building with an intercom system could provide a sign giving Deaf and Hard of Hearing people or people who are unable to speak an alternate way to call to gain admittance.
- A sports stadium or concert hall could provide a quiet room or a quiet space for people with autism or other disabilities that cause sensitivity to noise, bright lights, or crowds.
- A state agency hosting a webinar could make the PowerPoint available in large print for people with vision loss.
There are so many large or small ways that an individual, an organization, a business, or a government agency could make something more accessible than it currently is so that people with disabilities can have equal access to all facilities, programs, and services that are available to the general public.

Join the NCCDD Accessibility Challenge!
In July, we honor the Americans with Disabilities Act, the landmark legislation that promotes inclusion and integration for people with disabilities, which became a law on July 26, 1990.
We celebrate the ADA Anniversary to raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities in all facets of community life, as well as awareness of the barriers that people with disabilities still face at times in connecting to the communities in which they live.
This year we would like to challenge everyone to make something accessible to people with disabilities. You can also share with us something you did in the past that may inspire others to make the community more accessible.

ADA Anniversary Update – Accessibility Online Webinar

Mark the 31st Anniversary of the ADA by joining this session as we hear from representatives of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) provide an update on their litigation, technical assistance, and enforcement efforts. Disability:IN NC ADA 31st Anniversary Celebration – Movie Preview
July 26, 2021 at Regal Birkdale 16 Cinema in Huntersville, NC
The afternoon will feature a screening of the award winning film "Lives Worth Living," a 2011 documentary film that was broadcast by PBS through ITVS, as part of the Independent Lens series. Starting from the post World War II era up to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990, the film is the first television documentary to chronicle the history of the disability rights movement in America.
